Malaria and the malaria carrying mosquitos are present in Botswana. It is important that the following simple guidlines are followed to limit the chances of getting malaria.
Preventio is better than cure, therefore:
Take malaria prophylactics
Use insect repellant in the evenings
Wear longsleeve shirts and trousers and closed shoes at night
Malaria Prophylactics
It is reccommended that you visit your doctor or local travel clinic before travelling to Botswana. Taking the prophylactics helps to prevent malaria. These tablets come in different strengths and your doctor will be able to reccommend the best medication for you.
Mosquito Repellant
The use of mosqiuto repellant greatly reduces the risks of contracting malaria. Spray or cream repellants should be applied at dusk and will protect you from being bitten through the night. Repellant can be purchased in Botswana at most supermarkets or pharmacies.
Mosquito Nets
Most of the lodges and tented camps will supply mosquito nets. Mobile camping safaris have tents with bulit in mosquito nets.
